An award-winning journalist known for her work warning the world about so-called climate change was “gifted” 100,000 euros ($107,114) by Spain’s second-largest bank for her work promoting climate alarmism.
Elizabeth Kolbert is a journalist who writes primarily for the New Yorker and who won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction in 2015 for her book, “The Sixth Extinction,” which claimed humanity and man-made climate change were causing a sixth extinction event. This book went so far as to claim that around half of all living species on Earth could disappear by the end of the century. On Sept. 27, 2022, Kolbert was granted the Fourth Biophilia Award for Environmental Communication “for her extraordinary ability to communicate in a rigorous and attractive manner the fundamental environmental challenges of our time, climate change and the biodiversity crisis, to a wide global audience.”
The Biophilia Awards are organized by the non-profit foundation of the Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria (BBVA), the second-largest bank in Spain and one of the largest financial institutions in the world.
The BBVA Foundation’s committee that gave Kolbert the Biophilia Award made reference to “The Sixth Extinction” and how it “documents the dramatic loss of species the planet is suffering” and how it has become “an internationally renowned work,” having been translated into more than 20 languages.
“The robust scientific solvency and literary excellence of her work exemplify how specialized journalism can contribute in a fundamental manner, both to disseminate the best scientific knowledge about the world’s great environmental challenges and to sensitize and make society aware about the need to act in order to confront them,” wrote the BBVA Foundation in its award.
The Biophilia Award comes with a prize of 100,000 euros. In her writings and in her statements made to the BBVA Foundation, Kolbert has made it clear that she wants to dedicate her life’s work to making sure that climate change is not up for debate.
Recalling her time writing for the New York Times, Kolbert expressed dissatisfaction with how the outlet granted space to experts who questioned the importance of global warming.
“Climate change was being covered as if it was up for debate among the scientific community, with some researchers for and others against,” she said. In the face of hearing climate skeptics, Kolbert wants to use her platform to drown these voices out and amplify other so-called scientific experts who can help her convey the message that “climate change is real and is going to affect us all.”
Kolbert herself admits that the task of retaining people’s interest in talking about climate change matters has become a daunting one, describing it as “a bit of an uphill struggle.” But due to organizations like the BBVA Foundation, Kolbert has the funding to keep pushing environmental stories out.
Chris Morrison, writing for The Daily Sceptic, described Kolbert as a “climate catastrophist straight from central casting.”
He wrote: “She fervently believes that humans can control the climate by adjusting levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, a proposition that is disputed by many scientists. She compares climate ‘deniers’ to flat-earthers. What ‘deniers’ think of climate science, or rather her take on said science, is ‘completely irrelevant.’ Like most people in her world, she says, ‘I have low tolerance for people who deny facts and disregard truths.'”
